NHD GEODATABASE

What’s New on the NHD Web Page

7/7/2008

The high resolution status layer has been updated to reflect the subregion maintenance-lite and subbasin revision work currently being performed by the USGS and NHD partners. This layer is now turned on by default.

4/17/2008

Another option for the NHD extracts format was added: ESRI personal geodatabase version 9.2. Check the 9.2 'Personal Geodatabase' box in the extract popup.

10/15/2007

The ArcInfo Coverage option was removed from the available extract options.

9/17/2007

In case you are not using the ESRI geodatabase formats, NHD extracts now offer the option of a flow table. Just check the 'Populate Flow Table' box in the extract popup. What is a flow table?

7/17/2007

NHD Website switched from ArcIMS 9.1 to ArcIMS 9.2.

7/10/2007

A link for the Guam subbasins was added to the bottom of the NHD map. Only subbasin 22010001 is currently available for download.

10/17/2007

Users may want to modify the symbology of the NHD WMS with lines of different colors and thicknesses and with different sized text. In order to simplify this task, an example showing the use of WMS Styled Layers Descriptors (SLD) with NHD was added here: http://webhosts.cr.usgs.gov/docs/sld.html

8/31/2007

An example showing the use of the WMS getFeatureInfo request was added: http://webhosts.cr.usgs.gov/docs/get_feature_info.html

If you are having problems connecting to the FTP site, you may need to disable you passive FTP setting in Internet Explorer.  To change this setting click Tools -> Options -> Advanced and scroll down about half way until you find a checkbox for "Use Passive FTP...".   If you uncheck this box, you should be able to get to the FTP site.

The shapefile extract under Polygon Extract has been removed because on 3/3/05, a shapefile extract with entire reaches and m and z values was added to the web site.  Click on the Help button to learn how to download a shapefile extract.

3/03/2005

Shapefile extracts with entire reaches and the m and z values are now available under the Polygon Extract option on the toolbar.  Click on the Help button to learn how to download a shapefile.  Note:  This new shapefile extract under Polygon Extract is different than the Shapefile Extract on the toolbar.   NOTE:  THE SHAPEFILE EXTRACT ON THE TOOLBAR HAS BEEN REMOVED 4/26/05.

1/31/2005

Pre-staged personal geodatabases by subregion are available on the ftp site ftp://nhdftp.usgs.gov/SubRegions.  Click the “Staged Subregions” on the bottom toolbar on the web to get to the ftp site.  Then click the High, Local, or Medium folder.  The geodatabases will be kept up-to-date and have a naming convention of NHD<resolution><4 digit subregion number>.zip.

1/28/05

Reminder:  Under Polygon Extract, the only reference layer supported for NHDGEOinARC is SUBBASIN and only ONE polygon will be extracted at a time.

1/13/2005

A print button has been added to the web site.  Just click the Print icon on the left side of the web page  and choose the size you would like to print.  Choose Portrait or Landscape and give it a title if you want something other than The NHD Print Page.  Then click the ‘Create Print Page’ button.

Note:  You may have to set up your printer and page size in Internet Explorer before printing.  To do this, while in Internet Explorer click on File, choose Page Setup. Click Printer to choose your printer.  Then choose the Orientation (ie.  Portrait or Landscape), and click OK.   Note:  The NED (National Elevation Dataset) is not showing up on the print page under the Legend at this time.  We are working on this.

With the geodatabase system, users can access any data in the database.  If data exists in the database over the extract extent, the user can download data.  If there are no features that intersect the extract area, the users are notified via email that no data is available.  Since we often have fringe features that overlap into the extract request area, the dataset is built and delivered.

11/29/2004

Pre-staged personal geodatabases by subregion at medium resolution are now available on the ftp site ftp://nhdftp.usgs.gov/SubRegions/Medium.  The geodatabases will be kept up-to-date and have a naming convention of NHD<resolution><4 digit subregion number>.zip. Look for high resolution pre-staged geodatabases by subregion in the near future.

6/1/2004

Shapefile Extract is Available, but does not include the “M” or “Z” Values.  This extract allows the user to pick which resolution they want (High, Medium, or Local).  Note:  High and Local Resolution are not available in certain parts of the country yet.  The extent of the extract is all features contained in the view screen area.  While we do not clip features, users may not get full reaches if the reach is composed of features that fall outside the view area.  The data only contains the features classes.  The data does not contain any of the metadata or other related tables.

Polygon Extract will let you extract the data by reference polygon into a Personal Geodatabase and NHDGEOinARC. This extract will be available via FTP.

There is a separation bar added on the toolbar to separate the download buttons from the rest of the tools available.

A MapServices link has been added to give you Web Mapping Service (WMS) information.

Please click the Help button (located on left of the web page on the toolbar) for references on how to use the web page, buttons and look and feel.

The NHDGEO Web Mapping Service (WMS) connector has been added to The National Map so you can view NHD Data on The National Map web site.
